Whether you have crystals for healing or just as ornaments for your home it is important to cleanse them from time to time, even if it is just to remove the dust. If you are more spiritually minded, you will know that the crystals are special and capable of projecting or absorbing energy, and unless properly cared for they can become dull and tired. Also when you first get your crystals it is important to cleanse them as they may have been on quite a journey, through many unknown hands before they come to you. If you use your crystals for healing or spell/dream weaving you should cleanse them before and after you work with them. So here are some tips on how to care for your mineral friends.
The simplest way to cleanse your crystals is to put them under a cool running tap, leaving it on for a few moments and imagining any impurities or negative energy running down the drain.
Avoid hot or very cold water as it may crack or fracture your crystal. A word of caution here though, not all crystals can tolerate water, and some such as Selenite and Sulfurite are water soluble, and will start to disolve if left in contact with water for too long!
As a rule of thumb you should avoid water cleansing with crystals that are below the Mohs scale of 3, if you aren't sure of your crystal's Mohs rating then to be on the safe side avoid water cleansing.
If you have a rough crystal, say a large unpolished Citrine or Rose Quartz, or a bed of crystals such as Amethyst that has become particulary grubby, you can use a little gentle soap such as Ecover washing-up liquid and a soft brush to gently clean the crystal before rinsing it well under running water.
Finally, a wonderfully natural way to cleanse your crystals using water is to pop them out in the rain and let mother nature do your crystal cleaning for you.
There are many sites out there that advise using salt/sea water, and in some extreme cases you may be advised to plunge your crystals into pure salt. DON'T DO IT!! Salt is highly corrosive and can do some serious damage to your crystals, and even those that can tolerate the salt will be left with a dulling residue on them.
This is a personal favourite of mine, smudging has it's roots buried deep in shamanic healing rituals and is suitable for ALL crystals.....and for your home, your loved ones and yes, you too! It is just a fabulous all round cleanser of negative/unwanted energies.
Smudging is very easy to do, the most important thing to keep in mind is your intention (cleansing your crystals of unwanted energy) and respect for this ancient practice. You will need a sage stick or some loose herbs, a fire/heatproof dish, some matches/a lighter and if possible a feather to direct the smoke in the direction of what you want to cleanse, but your hand will do just as well. Light your sage and let the smoke cover all the surfaces of your crystal, you can either do this by directing the smoke to the crystal or hold the crystal in your fingers and pass it through the smoke several times. When you have finished cleansing you crystals, dispose of the ash with respect, by either burying it in the ground or putting it into a running stream or similar.
You can cleanse your crystals by burying them in the ground, and this is best performed during the dark of a New Moon. Wrap the crystals in a soft cloth and for extra protection place in a wooden box. Then bury it in the ground, this is like sending the crystal back to the womb of the Earth where it originally came from, to rest in darkness. Keep in mind that this is best done when it isn't raining to avoid water damage and also don't forget where you have buried your treasure!
Once your crystals are cleansed you can then place them overnight in light of the Moon, a Full Moon is the best time for this, or place them in the sunlight for a while. Don't leave your coloured crystals in direct sunlight for too long though as it may fade the colour.
Finally, Quartz, particularly Rutilated Quartz is programmable, and this programming can be reinforced by repetition, if you are using a Quartz for manifestation you shouldn't cleanse it until your desired results have been achieved, otherwise you will be clearing away your hard work.
That's all for now crystal lovers :)
